National Nonprofit Food Rescue US Named 2023 Chick-fil-A True Inspiration Award Recipient

Food Rescue US Selected to Receive $200,000 Grant in Inaugural “Caring for our Planet” Category from Chick-fil-A, Inc.

Food Rescue US, a national nonprofit based out of Stamford, CT, has been named the recipient of a $200,000 grant through the annual Chick-fil-A® True Inspiration Awards® program. This grant will help further Food Rescue US’s efforts to reduce food waste and food insecurity.

One of just four nonprofits chosen in the inaugural “Caring for our Planet” category, Food Rescue US is dedicated to eliminating hunger and food waste (keeping food out of landfills and reducing greenhouse gasses). The organization engages volunteers and food donors through their proprietary web-based app to directly transfer nutritious excess food to social service agencies serving the food insecure. With this award, Food Rescue US will focus on continuing to increase their capacity and footprint in the communities that they serve so that more individuals and families will be better nourished and emissions caused by food waste that impact climate change will be significantly lower.

Carol Shattuck, Chief Executive Officer for Food Rescue US, shared, “It is an honor to receive a Chick-fil-A True Inspiration Award, especially in their inaugural “Caring for our Planet” category. It is critically important that we all recognize the urgency of climate change and the need to reduce carbon emissions. The fact that one of the most significant solutions to reducing carbon emissions is reducing food waste that ends up in landfill and decomposes speaks directly to the importance of our work. Each year our growing network of communities around the country keep millions of pounds of donated food out of landfill and instead deliver this food to social service agencies that feed individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. This is a win/win for helping save our planet and fighting hunger.”

Food Rescue US is one of 46 True Inspiration Awards grant recipients that are receiving a collective $5 million in grants. To be selected for a grant, organizations must work to address key issues that align with Chick-fil-A’s corporate social responsibility priorities: Caring for People, Caring for Others through Food, Caring for our Communities and Caring for our Planet.

The True Inspiration Awards were established in 2015 to carry on Chick-fil-A Founder S. Truett Cathy’s legacy of generosity and community service. Since that time, 250 grants have been distributed to organizations located across 36 states, Washington, D.C., and Canada, impacting more than 3.5 million people. Individual grants range from $30,000 to $350,000.

“Through our True Inspiration Awards grant program, Chick-fil-A helps empower local nonprofits that are leading positive change and creating tangible impact throughout the communities they serve,” said Brent Fielder, senior director of corporate social responsibility for Chick-fil-A, Inc. “This year, we added a new grant category – Caring for our Planet – to help support additional nonprofits that act as good stewards of the planet we share. It is our pleasure to invest in the growth and legacy of all our 2023 recipient organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada.”
