Detroit Location Expanding Weekly Distributions
Local food recovery nonprofit Food Rescue US – Detroit has announced the expansion of their weekly farm distribution program, providing 1,600 25-pound produce boxes to over 15 community-based social service agencies. The program, that started in late May, will now continue through the end of August.
Through partnerships with The Farm Link Project and the USDA Farmers to Families Program, Food Rescue US – Detroit has already provided over 400,000 lbs. of food to social service agency partners throughout Metro Detroit while also supporting the neighboring cities of Flint, Saginaw, Midland, and Ypsilanti.
“I know this food is making a huge impact on those who receive it, but it’s also incredibly meaningful for every person involved in these distributions each Friday” said Darraugh Collins, Site Director, Food Rescue US – Detroit. “We are able to build community when we are so isolated from one another, while also nourishing our community during this difficult time. We are so grateful to the TCF Center team for being such an incredible partner in this effort.”
Every Friday, with the help of over 20 local volunteers, Food Rescue US – Detroit uses the loading dock at TCF Center to receive and distribute the produce boxes.
“One of the food insecurity issues we deal with in the 48213 area is the lack of fresh produce and accessibility to that produce given that grocery stores that have it are over 7 miles away. We are excited to receive and distribute produce like this within our community and it is making a difference to those we provide for, which include families and seniors,” said Stephen Herrod, Pastor, Bethel Baptist Church East.
Part of national food recovery nonprofit Food Rescue US, Food Rescue US – Detroit has provided over 481,000 meals to the food insecure and kept over 577,000 pounds of food from landfill since starting in 2019.
