Food Rescue US – Miami Partners with Alter, Kilgore Culinary, and World Central Kitchen for Second Community Kitchen

Miami, FL, May 5, 2020 – In partnership with James Beard Finalist Brad Kilgore, Kilgore Culinary and World Central Kitchen, Food Rescue US – Miami is opening their second Community Kitchen out of Alter in Wynwood. Known for its creative and innovative menu, Chef Brad Kilgore and his team will shift their focus to producing 1,000-1,200 free meals a week for curbside, no contact distribution to unemployed hospitality workers and other food insecure individuals within the community. Beyond producing meals, the partnership will also provide support for the kitchen staff of Alter.

Beginning on Tuesday May 5th, meals will be available from 2pm to 5pm, while supplies last, for curbside pick-up. Each meal serves two people and will also be offered on Thursday, May 7th and Saturday, May 9th.

With its chef-driven and seasonal cuisine focused on highlighting ingredients from Florida and around the world, Alter is known as one of the standout restaurants in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood.

“We have been working with Food Rescue and Ellen Bowen for years by donating extra food to those in need,” said Brad Kilgore. “We had already been planning on a dinner this year to be hosted at Brava to raise funds to buy them a truck to move supplies and food around town. Although that was postponed Ellen and I have believed since the beginning of the COVID shutdowns that we wanted to feed those who have lost their jobs and are hitting financial hardships. After all, this is the hospitality industry and feeding people is what we do.”

Food Rescue US – Miami partners with over 90 food donors, including restaurants and hotels, to recover excess food and provide it to food insecure individuals and families throughout Dade and Broward County. Since the start of the pandemic, over 250,000 local hotel and restaurant workers have filed for unemployment and Food Rescue US – Miami has shifted their focus to providing for the same individuals that generously donated their food pre-COVID-19.

They opened their first Community Kitchen in partnership with World Central Kitchen and Red Rooster Overtown, the new Marcus Samuelson restaurant. Over the past five weeks, the partnership has provided 3,500 free meals to food insecure individuals.

Food Rescue US – Miami also recently partnered with Tiller & Hatch Supply Co., a brand of high-quality meals backed by global superstar Jennifer Lopez and Major League Baseball great Alex Rodriquez, to provide 20,000 meals to displaced hospitality workers throughout Dade and Broward county.

“It has been amazing to see the impact these new partnerships have had for those in need within our community,” said Ellen Bowen, Site Director, Food Rescue US – Miami. “With all the additional stressors for the unemployed due to COVID-19, it’s nice to know we can provide meals to alleviate the worry of someone’s next meal during this crisis.”

Part of national food recovery nonprofit Food Rescue US, Food Rescue US – Miami has provided over 411,000 meals and kept over 360,000 pounds of food from landfill, including 35,000 pounds of excess food that was recovered from Super Bowl LIV in February 2020.
